Digital Positron Emission Computed Tomography

You will learn the following information in the news:

What is PET/CT;

How it is conducted;

Advantages;

Foreign supporters.

Positron-Emission Computed Tomography is a research method of nuclear medicine, which is a recognized gold standard in the early diagnosis and management of onco diseases!

What is PET/CT?

This is a hybrid research method of nuclear medicine, which combines Positron-Emission and the Computed Tomography. Summarizing their data reveals the exact localization and metabolism of the tumor formation. Compared to healthy tissues, tumor cells are characterized by enhanced glucose metabolism, metabolic changes, however, always precede anatomical ones. That is why this method of research makes it possible to diagnose oncological diseases at an early stage.

How is the research conducted?

The study is performed with a radioactive isotope (FDG – fluorine18 fluoro-deoxy-glucose). The patient receives this isotope intravenously, through a catheter, its dose is only diagnostic and has no side effects. Digital Positron-Emission Computed Tomography records isotope distribution in the body. Most importantly, the patient receives only the slightest radiation load during the research process. It is necessary to delay the patient for one hour from the injection to the shooting. The maximum time for examining the whole body is 20 minutes.

Advantages of the Digital PET/CT from the National Center of Surgery compared to „analog“ devices

High image quality at the expense of increased sensitivity;Detects even the smallest tumor foci, that do not exceed 2-3 mm;

Allows us to accurately describe the formation;

Consumes a lower dose of the isotope, therefore, Digital PET/CT is less sensitive to its half-disintegration period and the patient receives less radiation;

The study is conducted in a minimum amount of time for the patient.

Without Positron-Emission Computed Tomography, accurate diagnosis and treatment tactics for cancer patients are impossible!

International S upporters

The clinic is fully supported by the Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Grade Hospital, Emory University, Professor Raghuveer K. Halkar. He visited Georgia in 2019 and presented a report at the National Center of Surgery, where he spoke about the role of the Positron-Emission Computed Tomography in modern oncology.

Shorena Esiashvili is a doctor-specialist in nuclear medicine. She began her career in nuclear medicine in 2004 in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Emory University, USA, where one of the first PET/CT operated.

Chemotherapy

Qauestion:: Hello, My mother received several courses of chemotherapy, because of metastatic involvement of bone and liver. During that time platelet count significantly decreased and only presented with small skin hemorrhages. In chemotherapy, platelet count sometimes increases or decreases, she simultaneously takes Revolade (50mg) on a daily basis and underwent platelet transfusion several times that had an only short-term effect. Is it possible to find another solution for the mentioned problem at your clinic? Thanks in advance
